Education & Career

These programs help improve academic skills, apply learning to everyday situations, embrace technology and develop skills.

Project Learn
Project Learn reinforces and enhances the knowledge gained from school through "high-yield" learning activities at the club and at home. This includes leisure reading, writing activities, homework assistance and educational games. Project Learn emphasizes collaborations between club staff, parents and school personnel.

Power Hour
Research shows that doing homework boosts academic achievement, regardless of the age or risk-level of the student. Studies also show that as students succeed in the classroom, they are less likely to drop out of school. Power Hour helps members ages 6-18 become self-directed learners by providing them with tutors and other forms of homework aid. Power Hour is conducted in a non-threatening, after-school environment, giving Club members the support they need to complete their homework and to receive tutoring when necessary.

Junior Staff
With one-on-one guidance from club staff, junior staffers get hands-on work experience helping the club and community. This prepares youths for future roles as human services professionals or community leaders.

Goals for Graduation
Goals for Graduation, sponsored by The JCPenney Afterschool Fund, introduces Club members ages 6-15 to the concept of academic goal setting. In one-on-one sessions with Club professionals, members set achievable "Know-I-Can" goals, more challenging "Think-I-Can" goals and yearly "Believe-I-Can" goals, then create action plans. The program provides for recognition of members' achievements at every step of the journey.

CareerLaunch
CareerLaunchTM is a career exploration and mentoring program for teens. This program includes the CareerLaunch Website that allows teens to take an interest survey, explore careers, identify training or college requirements, seek out financial aid and play skills-building games. There's also an easy-to-use Career Exploration Quick Reference Guide with a broad range of career planning and job skills activities that Club staff or volunteers can use with teens. The CareerLaunch Portfolio contains a Teen Tips booklet with helpful interviewing and on-the-spot job tips.

Job Ready
Job Ready! teaches ages 16-18 effective job-hunting techniques and helps form the skills needed to succeed once hired. Job Ready! is sponsored by the Taco Bell Foundation as part of the TEENSupreme Career Prep program.

Career Exploration
The Career Explorers Club introduces ages 13-15 to career opportunities by taking them where real work happens -- work sites, businesses, government agencies, colleges, universities, etc. Also sponsored by Taco Bell's TEENSupreme Career Prep program, it provides early teens with career information options and identifies the educational and training requirements of their choices.
